2:00-3:15 The World Lit by Lightning: Scholars Unveil a Favorite Williams-Related Image

In 2021, the New Orleans / Tennessee Williams Literary Festival took place entirely online. In lieu of the annual day-long Tennessee Williams Scholars Conference, audiences were invited to participate in a lively, visually oriented lightning-round session featuring a panel of distinguished Williams scholars assembled by conference founder Robert Bray. Each panelist showed a favorite Williams-related image and talked conversationally about why they love it. Designed for general audiences and specialists alike, topics included the immortal Anna Magnani, Iranian film adaptations of Williams, a Japanese Noh-inspired production of Night of the Iguana, and the (in)famous image of the reconciliation between Stanley and Stella in the film version of A Streetcar Named Desire. The live session was followed by a Q&A.
Speakers: Robert Bray, Middle Tennessee State University (emeritus) Tiffany Gilbert, University of North Carolina, Wilmington R. Barton Palmer, Clemson University (emeritus) Naghmeh Rezaie, University of Delaware Bess Rowen, Villanova University Moderator: Margit Longbrake, The Historic New Orleans Collection
